Hola and welcome to the 9th show of the year, and this one is a cracker. Compilations are the lifeblood of any great recording industry. Call ’em samplers, call them grab-bags, they are often full of the rare and the interesting. So in tribute to the institution that is compilations, this show is all about the compile.

First cab off the ranks are two complies from the mighty Phantom label from Sydney, home of so many amazing bands and the place where so many great artists earned their money selling records behind the long counter. We start with four tracks from two compile. The first compile comes from 1983 and is called ‘Paths of Pain to Jewels of Glory’. From this we sample two tracks, the incredible Flaming Hands and ‘it’s just that I miss you’ and the incomparable Machinations and Average Inadequacy (I know I have played this before, but who cares, really?). The second compile came later (from around 1988) called Assorted Desecrations And Magnificent Mutations and we have, well the same songs by The Hummingbirds and the Vanilla Chainsaws respectively.

Next its the soundtrack, with its unique mix of original and curated tracks. Three here from Aussie flicks, Blacrock provides us with our first WOR glimpse of Sidewinder from Canberra. The second track comes from the Richard Lowenstein film ‘Dogs in Space’ and Michael Hutchence doing the title track, and finally one my fave film soundtracks ‘Love and Other Catastrophes’ and Dave Graney being Dave Graney, you are just too hip baby/

We move onto covers compiles, another art form. get a whole lot of bands together, make cover, sell records. Let’s start with Angie Hart covering reckless by Australian Crawl found on some random label sampler, Sean Kelly and Anne McCue from the Rockwiz album covering Under the Milky Way and finally Glen Bennie from Underground Lovers with the aforementioned Angie Hart covering Devil’s Eye from the UK Rare Victory compile ‘Love goes on’ a tribute to Grant McLennan.

OK, back to labels and Sydney’s Red Eye is another institution. I dropped thousands there and met lots of great people who knew far more about music that I did. I have picked four tracks from Red Eye samplers and compiles, mainly ‘Assorted A’ and Bs’, but there is more to them than that. Three are from the Brothers Kilbey; John (Bhagavdad guitars), Russell (Crystal Set) and Steve (solo) and the other is from the former wife of Steve, in the guise of Curious Yellow).

Finally, we cheat a little and focus on a greatest hits compile. But we could not let the passing of Darryl Cotton go unnoticed. Enjoy the great Evil Child and the without peer ‘Eleanor Rigby’ RIP DC.

Until next time, enjoy!
